K9 On Duty At Boyle Co. High

Posted: Updated:

BOYLE COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) The newest member of the Boyle County Sheriff's Office is keeping students and faculty safe at Boyle County High School.

The four-year-old German Shepherd named Petey was donated to the department by a kennel in Florida that trains police dogs.

"A dog that does what he does, which is, he's a passive tracking dog if somebody gets lost, he would track them. He also locates drugs. 11,000 dollars is what it would cost if we were to go out and buy him" said Ricky Sellers with the Boyle County Sheriff's Office. "Petey is just so laid back and he loves to be loved on, the kids actually come up, kids I don't even know, come up to me now and talk to me because of Petey."

Sellers said he is more like a therapy dog than anything. When students have bad days, they pet on Petey.

He said he also likes the fact that kids come up and talk to him because of Petey. Sellers is a School Resource Officer and Petey has helped build a bridge between him and the students.
