JACKSON COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) People in Jackson County are mourning the loss of 5-year-old James Spoonamore whose body was found in the woods after he and his mother were kidnapped.
Spoonamore had just started preschool at McKee Elementary. School officials said that they sent a letter home to parents letting them know the heartbreaking news.
KSP said that Lonnie Belt went to confront Spoonamore's mother, Jesse Durham, on Friday. Troopers said that Belt then forced them both into a car and drove to a wooded area. At one point, there was a struggle between Durham and Belt. She was thrown off a cliff and was found alive on Saturday by some hikers.
On Monday, the 5-year-old's body was found not far from where his mother was rescued.
Employees at the Jackson County Library called the child a 'ray of sunshine' and said that he used to come in a lot with his mother, who worked there last year.
"An innocent 5-year-old child, I mean you know that to me is... that devastated me. I cried all day yesterday," said Library Director Malta Flannery.
School officials tell LEX 18 that they have counselors at the school. They will not comment further as the KSP investigation is still active.
A gofundme account has been established to help raise funeral expenses while the boy's mother recovers.
