Hurricane Evacuees Find Refuge In Kentucky

Posted: Updated:

ROCKCASTLE COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) Once the magnitude of the storm was apparent, the owners of one Rockcastle County campground didn't waste any time reaching out to people to try and lend a helping hand.

It started as a simple social media post.

“I posted on our Facebook page, if there was anyone coming from the Carolinas, or Georgia, or Florida, just to let them know that we had some space we were going to make available for any evacuees that needed to get out,” said Holly Richard with Renfro Valley KOA.

The invitation wasn't passed up.

“We rented their cabin here. We have three children and two cats that we had to evacuate with. It hard to find a place that will hold five people and two cats,” said Maggie O'Conner who evacuated from Savannah, Georgia. “Our town got hit pretty hard. The neighborhoods are mostly flooded but not the houses, just the streets and everything, there's a lot of trees down and some neighborhoods don't have power but, they have rescinded the evacuation order; so people can go home now.”

About two dozen families rode out the storm at the campground. Staff hopes to help even more people by shipping much needed supplies directly to Florida.

“I know a lot of people, financially, weren't able to help with money, but they had things..they had items that they could donate,” said Richard.

KOA staff already sent one truck load down to Florida. They hope to make another run next Tuesday.
