GC Volleyball Beats Campbellsville

For the third time this season, Georgetown College volleyball defeated a team receiving votes in the national coaches’ poll in straight sets.

The No. 18 Tigers (5-1, 1-1) traveled to Campbellsville, Ky. and defeated previously unbeaten Mid-South Conference foe Campbellsville University 25-19, 25-19, 25-23. Ashton Meckle tied her career-high for kills in a three set match with a season-high 12. The sophomore made the most of every opportunity, having just one error on 18 swings for a team-high .611 attack percentage.

When the team needed it most, Jenny Howell stepped up her attack. The senior had six kills in the first two sets, but as Georgetown trailed in set three she had eight kills. She finished with a team-high 14 on the evening.

The visiting Tigers faced its largest deficit in set three as CU (8-1, 1-1) found a rhythm to push ahead 8-4. GC coach Christina Coleman called time out and refocused her team. A kill from Sarah Snyder, an ace by Kassidy Rauh and a kill by Howell had moment swinging in Georgetown’s favor. GC eventually grabbed a pair of leads off Howell kills, but the set was still nip and tuck until late in the set.

Howell’s seventh kill put GC up 17-16 and Lexie Gatewood behind the line. The freshman served the Tigers to breathing room and despite a furious attack – Campbellsville erased two match points – Jessica Tapp ended it all with her 10th kill.

Rauh finished with a new career-high 41 assists, while also adding three kills on six swings with no errors. Gatewood finished with a team-high 15 digs, four assists and three aces. Madison Mudd, Gracen Howard and Howell each had seven digs.

Caroline Ricks had eight kills and a team-high two block assists.

The Tigers are back in action 6 pm Thursday at Kentucky State University.
