Adoption Fees Covered at Lexington Shelters Saturday

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, KY (Lex 18) - For Saturday only, the adoption fees for all animals at both Lexington Humane Society locations will be covered for anyone interested in adoption.

Over the past few weeks, the shelter has brought in many unexpected dogs and cats.

"When Texas and Florida were hit, it was really just something that we knew we had to do and reach out and try to help them as much as we can," said Lexington Humane Society Special Events Coordinator Ashley Marcum.

Over the past few weeks, the shelter took in more than two dozen animals needing to be relocated from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. All but three cats now have forever homes.

Saturday, with the help of the Bissell Pet Foundation, the shelter is hoping to make room to bring in more.

"They are actually covering all of our adoption fees here at our main location and at our adoption facility at PetSmart," Marcum said.

Each free adoption means more room for other furry hurricane evacuees. The shelter hopes to bring in another 26 dogs from Texas next week along with more from Florida.

"We're hoping that this event will give us some more room," Marcum said. "Hopefully our community will come out and support us and help us be able to do that."

While you won't have to pay any adoption fees, you may still have to pay for a city pet license.

If you aren't ready to bring a pet home, you can still chip in. Donations to the shelter will help cover any costs of bringing the animals to town.
