Bike Polo World Championship Being Held In Lexington

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - People from all over the world are in Lexington this week to compete in the 2017 World Hardcourt Bike Polo Championship.

Those working to put on the event told LEX 18 that Lexington is actually a hub for biking, due to the infrastructure at Coolavin Park.

"People controlling their bikes in ways you might not have been aware you could," said Alias Tagami.  "It's a high speed sport that's really technically difficult.  Everyone is riding with one hand because they are operating their mallet."

Participants compared bike polo to hockey.

"You've got a lot of things to coordinate when you're playing bike polo.  Your mallet, your bike, your teammates, and the other team.  It's just 30 minutes of pure focus and intensity," said Shannon Frye, who represents Team Benchmark.

The teams competing have traveled from multiple countries, including France, Italy, England, Spain, Japan, Ecuador, Australia, and New Zealand.

The event runs through Saturday and the players and fans who love the sport said they are looking forward to sharing it with the city of Lexington.
