Man Indicted With Murder Of Woman At Somerset Church

Posted: Updated:

PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) - An indictment has been returned against the Pulaski Man accused of murdering a woman in the activity center of her church.

The Commonwealth's Attorney confirms that Bell has been indicted on charges including murder, robbery, theft, evidence tampering and being a persistent felony offender.

Police said that Bell confessed to the murder of Ruthie Carolyn New, whose body was discovered in the activity center of Denham Street Baptist Church in August.

Dwight Mitchell Bell was found in Dandridge, Tennessee and arrested without incident on charges stemming from the theft of New's vehicle. An arrest warrant said he was at a Pilot Travel Center. The warrant said that further investigation showed that Bell was wanted in Henry County, Indiana on a strangulation charge as well.

The church's pastor told LEX 18 that Bell had visited the church before, but he was not a member.

In 1999, Bell was arrested for the death of his father in Indiana. He was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to several years in prison.
