Restaurant Server Saves Sergeant

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) On Thursday, a Woodford County sergeant was reunited with the man who saved his life.

On August 10, Sergeant Keith Broughton was attending a luncheon at The Chophouse in Lexington when he began to choke.

"I was actually on my way out the door and another server came and said the officer needed help, he was choking," said server Nicholas Clem.

Without a second thought, Clem stayed calm and performed the Heimlich Maneuver.

"I'm obviously very thankful that he was here," said Sgt. Broughton.

On Thursday, they were reunited when Clem was presented with an honor from the Highway Safety Department in the middle of his shift.

"For us to hear that he was in distress but that Mr. Clem was here and available to help him and assist him, you know we call that a Highway Safety Hero," said Dr. Noelle Hunter with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety.

Clem told LEX 18 that he doesn't see it that way. He said he was just returning the favor to someone who has done more than his share to help.

"I was doing the same thing that he would've done if the roles were reversed," said Clem.

Dr. Hunter said this is the only Highway Safety Hero honor that she has handed out in her nearly year and a half tenure.
