IRVING, Texas – Following yet another stellar performance, WKU Volleyball’s Alyssa Cavanaugh has earned the title of Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week the league office announced Monday. The outside hitter has now collected a pair of offensive honors on her senior campaign and five throughout her career.
Cavanaugh led the Lady Topper squad to its Conference USA-record 30th-straight win over a league opponent – including regular season and tournament play – with 24 kills in Friday night’s sweep of Southern Miss. The pin hitter’s 24 kills in just three sets ties for the fourth-most by a student-athlete in a three-set match across the nation this season. Cavanaugh worked at a .476 hitting clip with 42 swings on the night while also adding a pair of aces from behind the service line to bring her total to 26.0 points on the match.
A couple milestones were achieved in the 14th-consecutive victory by the Red and White as well. Cavanaugh moved into third place on WKU’s all-time kills leaderboard with 1,616 strikes to date. The Louisville, Ky., native also overtook the sixth slot on the program’s all-time attacks list, currently owning 3,607.
With the help of Cavanaugh along with its other offensive weapons, WKU Volleyball has now won 48-consecutive home matches against conference opponents dating back to 2011 during the squad’s time in the Sun Belt.
Cavanaugh’s accolade brings WKU’s 2017 total to 11 honors in seven weeks of distribution. Fellow seniors Jessica Lucas (5) and Sydney Engle (3) in addition to Rachel Anderson (1) have also earned honors this season.
WKU is back in action tomorrow night with its final non-conference match of the year as Austin Peay (17-3) comes to town for a 7 p.m. CT contest.
