Greathouse Smashes 22 Kills as Volleyball Rallies for a 3-2 WIn Over WVSU

Posted: Updated:

After dropping the first two sets of the night against West Virginia State University, Kentucky State University volleyball rallied back to win three straight sets to claim a 3-2 win on the road Tuesday night.

The Thorobrettes (16-8, 9-2) have won three consecutive matches as they prepare to head south this weekend for the third and final SIAC Cluster at Spring Hill College. The Yellow Jackets (11-8) had won back-to-back matches before dropping the contest to KSU, and have now gone 2-3 over their last five matches.

Each set on the night was tightly contested, as the first set leaked into extra play with WVSU taking the early advantage with a 28-26 victory. The Yellow Jackets looked to make it an early night, capturing the second set at 25-20, and jumping up to a 2-0 advantage.

The aggressive play by junior middle blocker Landri Greathouse helped kick-start the Thorobrettes on the comeback trail in the third set. She recorded four kills in the third set for KSU, including the final two points to claim the victory at 25-21.

KSU rode the momentum into the fourth set, behind the aggressive play of freshman outside hitters Robin Pooleand Makayla Martin. The duo each claimed double-doubles, as KSU snatched the fourth set at 25-19, as well as the fifth and final set to complete the comeback at 15-12.

Greathouse notched a career-high and a season-high in kills for the Thorobrettes at 22, along with six blocks, and an eye-popping .543 attack percentage. Sophomore setter Hannah Smyers added a career-high 51 assists to set the tone for Greathouse, Poole, and Martin.

Poole's double-double of 16 digs and 13 kills was her team-leading seventh of the season. Martin leads the team with 19 digs, and 13 kills, for her fifth double-double.

KSU will play five matches in two days beginning with Tuskegee University to cap off the SIAC Cluster at SHC on Friday at 11 am ET.
