Off-Duty Officer Fires Weapon At Louisville Kroger During Shoplifting Incident

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - An off-duty corrections officer says firing his gun while confronting an accused shoplifter was an accident.

The accidental discharge of the weapon was reported at the Highlands Kroger in Louisville.

A Kroger spokesperson told our sister station WAVE 3 News that the incident appeared to be an accidental discharge of a weapon by an off-duty Louisville Metro Department of Corrections officer. The officer was not working at the Kroger at the time, according to the spokesperson.

Louisville Metro Police say that the off-duty officer was inside the Kroger store when he was advised of a shoplifting incident. The officer confronted the alleged shoplifter in the parking lot and fired a gunshot.

LMDC said the suspect got in a car and used the vehicle to try to cause harm to the Corrections Officer, which led to the shooting. The officer was not in uniform, according to LMDC.

The shoplifter got away and it is currently unclear what he stole, according to the Kroger spokesperson.
