SOMERSET, Ky. (LEX 18) - A grandchild accidentally shot and killed his grandmother in a tragic accident, sheriff's officials confirm.
The coroner has identified the victim as 68-year-old Eutta Phelps. A relative tells us Phelps' grandson got a hold of a loaded gun as she drove them home from church Wednesday on Highway 1003. They say the gun somehow went off and struck Phelps.
Deputies say that Phelps, age 68 had received a single gunshot wound.
Preliminary investigation indicates that one of Ms. Phelp's grandsons was operating a 2015 Chevrolet owned by Ms. Phelps. Two of her other grandsons, both juveniles, were in the back seat examining a handgun that had been left in the back seat. A 12-year-old male discharged the firearm striking Ms. Phelps who was sitting in the front passenger seat.
The children's father told LEX 18 that he just wants his children to understand that this incident was not their fault and that it was only a tragic accident.
