Laurel Co. Sheriff's Office Investigating DUI Crash

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) The Laurel County Sheriff's Office is investigating a crash where deputies say a driver was under the influence.

The crash happened on Thursday at 7:25 a.m. on Rocky Branch Road. Deputies report that a car was traveling eastbound when it passed an eastbound van in a curve, lost control, clipped the front end of the van and went off the roadway overturning in a ditch.

The driver of the car, 48-year-old Melissa Sams, was transported to St. Joseph Hospital London and then flown to UK.,

Jitendra Patel, the driver of the van, had minor injuries and was not transported.

During the investigation, deputies determined that Sams was under the influence. 

Deputies found drug paraphernalia and drugs including a baggie reportedly containing methamphetamine and Xanax that Sams stated she had taken the day before. Deputies say she stated she had used a five dollar bill(that deputies found with residue on it) to snort meth the day before.

Sams was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence – second offense; assault – 4th degree; possession of a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense – methamphetamine: possession of drug paraphernalia; and three counts of possession of a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense.

She was cited to Laurel District Couty due to her injuries.
