WAYNE COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) - The small community around Highway 92 in Wayne County remained stunned Saturday. The area was rocked Friday night by a double homicide and deadly officer-involved shooting.
57-year-old Paul Dolen, 55-year-old Sandra Dolen, and 62-year-old Russell Dolen are all dead as a result of the events that unfolded around 9 Friday night in the 6000 block of East Highway 92 in Oil Valley.
Neighbors who knew the Dolen family will told LEX18'S Jacqueline Nie that the family was well known and loved, and they are confused about how something like this could have happened.
"I couldn't believe it, I couldn't believe it. Knowing the people, I couldn't believe it, " said Wayne County resident, Anna Elam. "I was watching TV, and I couldn't figure out what all those sirens were doing. It was just one right after another."
Investigators say 57-year-old Paul Dolen shot and killed his wife, 55-year-old Sandra Dolen at their home just outside of Monticello Friday night. They say Paul then went down the road and shot and killed his cousin, 62-year-old Russell Dolen. The sheriff's department met Paul in the family barn across the road, where Paul had two hand-guns and a rifle. Investigators say Paul shot at the deputies, forcing the deputies to fire back, killing Paul.
"It just, it just happened. I don't know, I don't know, I don't know what is wrong with people, I really don't, " said Elam.
Kentucky State Police continue to investigate. No motive has been released.
