Two Officers Fired For Dragging Dr. Dao Off United Flight

Posted: Updated:

(NBC) Two Chicago law enforcement officers involved in dragging Louisville Dr. David Dao off the United Airlines' flight were fired, according to NBC News. A third officer resigned and another received a five-day suspension which was shortened to two days.

The report from Chicago's Inspector General Joseph Ferguson did not reveal the identities of the officers, but the report said an officer and Aviation Security sergeant were the ones fired.

Dr. Dao broke his nose, lost two teeth, and sustained a concussion when he was dragged off a flight from Chicago to Louisville after United Airlines officials said the seat was needed for a crew member working a connecting route and he refused to leave his seat.

Ferguson's report said that the security officer who pulled the doctor from his seat broke department policy when he "escalated a non-threatening situation into a physically violent one,"

The two officers that were fired also apparently tried to cover for each other, officials say. NBC reports that one officer made misleading statements in two reports and the other made material omissions in a report.
