Hearing For Man Accused In Transylvania University Stabbing Attack Delayed Until December

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - A hearing expected today for the suspect accused of attacking two women with a machete at Transylvania University is was delayed until December.

Mitchell Adkins, 19, faces multiple wanton endangerment and assault charges for the April attack inside Jazzman's Café. The university and nearby schools were forced into lockdown because of the attack.

Judge Kim Bunnell said late Friday morning that the status hearing set for later this afternoon was being delayed until December. The hearing had been delayed twice before, sparking a "call to action" posting on Facebook that seeks to draw a crowd Friday to protest what detractors claim is undue delay in the case.

In May, Adkins was arraigned and his bond was set for $25,500. His attorney entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Police told LEX 18 that Adkins entered Jazzman's Cafe on campus armed with a machete and a bag full of knives.

Witnesses said he yelled, "The day of reckoning is here!"

Police say Adkins then pulled out the machete and attacked a female student. She was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Another female was struck and was treated at the scene.

Classmates identified Adkins as a student who posted a controversial Buzzfeed article two years ago. According to what witnesses say is his personal Facebook page, he wrote an article complaining about the treatment of conservative students on Transy's campus. The article "Discrimination Of Conservatives In Liberal Arts" states, "I'm the one who's lashed out at for being a 'racist' or 'bigot,' some even go as far as saying 'bane of society' or 'fascist Nazi.' "

A witness inside the shop says Adkins pulled out the machete and began asking people about their political beliefs before attacking.

"He asked the first girl if she was a Democrat or a Republican," said Michael Soder, who witnessed the attack. "She said Republican. He said OK, then asked some other girl."

Those who witnessed the attack said that the attacker told the girl who identified as a Republican that she was safe. They say that the man then moved on to the next woman and when she said Democrat, he stabbed her. A second woman was also injured. She was treated at the scene.

Adkins was indicted on charges of first-degree assault, fourth-degree assault, four counts of terroristic threatening, resisting arrest and three counts of menacing.

Adkins has been out of jail. Prosecutors have asked that he not contact the victims or Transylvania University in person or on social media.

In May, his bond was set at $25,500. LEX 18 learned Adkins bonded out of jail in June on a full cash bond.
