Lexington Woman Nursing Her 2 Dogs -- And Seeking Changes -- After Attack By Another Canine

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) -- A Lexington woman is caring for her two dogs -- and hoping to raise awareness -- after they were attacked by another canine.

Barbara Drake said she's hoping to draw attention with the hope that animal control laws are strengthened following the attack last Saturday.

"I was in shock," Drake says. "Basically I had hurt myself too because I dove in on top of the dogs."

Drake says what began as a leisurely walk through the neighborhood turned into a traumatic attack when a pit bull burst out of a neighborhood home's storm door.

She says it began thrashing her 13-year-old dog Deanie. Drake says the pit bull was briefly restrained but broke free and attacked her other dog, Bravo.

"I've walked down there dozens of times with my grandchildren," Drake says, adding that she never will walk down that street again.

"There are kids and pets all over that neighborhood, and I'm afraid," she said. "And my neighbors are afraid to walk their dogs."

Drake claims this might not be the first time the pit bull has attacked another pet in the neighborhood.

She says her dog Deanie's eyelid and ear were lacerated and that Bravo suffered a seizure.

The pit bull remains in the Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control facility as an investigation into the incident continues.
