Texas Church Shooting Assailant Escaped Mental Health Facility In 2012, Made Death Threats

Posted: Updated:

HOUSTON, Texas (KPRC2) - Devin Kelley, the man who fatally shot 26 churchgoers in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on Sunday, escaped from a mental health facility in New Mexico in 2012, according to documents uncovered by reporters at KPRC2.

An incident report by the El Paso Police Department says Kelley was picked up June 7, 2012, at downtown bus terminal. The police were responding to a report of a missing person and learned Kelley recently fled a Santa Teresa, New Mexico, facility, Peak Behavioral Health Services.

According to the report, a witness said Kelley, 21-years-old at the time, had made death threats against his superiors and "was a danger to himself and others as he had already been caught sneaking firearm onto Holloman Air Force base," which is about 100 miles from the bus terminal.

El Paso police later released Kelley to officers from Sunland Park Police Department in New Mexico. The El Paso report says information was given to the FBI's National Crime Center.
