Drug Samples from Breeders' Cup Horses Cleared by Lab

Posted: Updated:

All samples collected from horses competing in the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar have tested clear.
The Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory at the University of California, Davis, announced the results on Tuesday.
All horses in the 13 races on Nov. 3 and 4 underwent pre-race testing for total carbon dioxide levels in their blood. The lab conducted post-race testing of blood and urine samples for prohibited drugs, including cobalt, from the first four finishers in all Cup races and any additional random horses selected by the stewards.
The lab's standard protocols look for over 75 anabolic steroids and in excess of a thousand other prohibited drugs and substances. All samples were in compliance with California Horse Racing Board regulations.
The CHRB and Breeders' Cup Limited conducted out-of-competition testing of all horses preparing to compete in the Breeders' Cup and all of those samples tested clear.
