Former Rockcastle County Employee Accused Of Pocketing Money From Fines

Posted: Updated:

ROCKCASTLE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) -  A Rockcastle County woman who worked for the County Attorney's office was arrested on several charges related to alleged theft of fines.

According to a warrant, Patty Kirby was charged with a felony count of abuse of public trust, theft by unlawful taking and a misdemeanor count of abuse of public trust.

An investigation was launched into potential misconduct by Kirby. A special investigator alleged that Kirby accepted a payment of fines of $153. Court documents say after she accepted the cash, Kirby then filed an "action slip"  and stamped the assistant county attorney's name requesting that the case be dismissed.

Kirby was fired from her position. A week after she was let go, another woman showed up to the courthouse asking for "Patty" in order to pay a fine of $187 for a traffic violation. The County Attorney's office does not normally accept payments for fines and in the rare cases that they do, they normally only accept cashier's checks.

A quick search of Courtnet's website showed that those charges had been dismissed by an "action slip."

The complaint says that several similar cases were revealed after investigation. Kirby was taken into custody Tuesday.
