Inmate Accused Of Murder For Hire Plot

Posted: Updated:

PARIS, KY (Lex 18) - A registered sex offender in Bourbon County already facing charges of rape and sodomy could now face a conspiracy to murder charge after an undercover investigation by Kentucky State Police's Drug Enforcement Special Investigations Unit.

Already in the Bourbon County Detention Center, State Police said Jonathan Richards caught their eyes again in August. This time, detectives said the inmate was targeting someone involved in his case.

"Through their investigation they did receive a contract, or were hired by Mr. Richards to ultimately kill that person participating in the legal process," said Trooper Charles Loudermilk.

More than a month later, the the 14th Circuit Commonwealth's Attorney brought the case before a grand jury. Soon, Richards was indicted on four more charges, including conspiracy to murder, retaliating against a participant in the legal process, conspiracy to trafficking in a controlled substance, and persistent felony offender.

"This is a clear example of we're not going to just sit back and let somebody try to threaten you or try to persuade you not to," said Trooper Loudermilk. "We are going to be right there to make sure everything goes according to the courts."

If convicted, Richards could face at least 20 years in prison on the conspiracy to murder charge alone.

He will be in Bourbon County court November 9th for a formal arraignment.

The Bourbon County Detention Center would not make him available for an interview.
