Driver Accused In Crash That Kills Family Of 5 Appears In Court

Posted: Updated:

INDEPENDENCE, KY (WLWT) - A man accused of crashing head-on with a vehicle, killing a family of five, made his first appearance in Kenton County court Wednesday in a hospital gurney.

Still bedridden after being seriously injured in the Oct. 26 fatal wreck, Daniel Greis spoke only once while being arraigned.

During the appearance, a Kenton County Police officer testified Greis was going 96 mph in a 55 mph zone before the wreck on Staffordsburg Road. Officials said the car was not braking and the accelerator was at 100 percent for at least three seconds.

Witnesses said Greis was tailgating a vehicle, and attempted to pass another vehicle by crossing the double-yellow line, according to an arrest warrant.

Samantha Malohn and Rodney Pollitt were killed in the crash, along with three children -- Hailieann Pollitt, 9, Brenden Pollitt, 8, and Cailie Pollitt, 6.

Family members of the five victims sat in the courtroom Wednesday still struggling with the heartbreaking loss.

"I just don't want the kid's memory to dissipate in the details," said Tina Morgan, mother of Samantha Malohn. "They were wonderful parents, the children were so young."

Greis' bond has been set at $1 million. He'll be transferred to a corrections facility when he gets out of the hospital.
