LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Kenya, Louisville Zoo's 18-year-old, was euthanized after multiple health issues.

Zoo officials said Kenya had been on "quality-of-life watch." The lion had been losing weight, had a decreased appetite and had not been eating well due to thrombocytopenia, a condition characterized by low blood platelets and difficulty clotting.

"We said goodbye to our dear Kenya this afternoon. We will miss you Kenya, your roar delighted and mesmerized little ones and big ones alike. You were a GREAT animal ambassador. We will remember you always!" the zoo wrote in a social media post.

WAVE 3 News reports that Kenya came to the Louisville Zoo in 2005 from Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri. Kenya shared the exhibit with 19-year-old female lion Kariba.
