Derby Museum Plans $6.5 Million Upgrade And Expansion

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) - Kentucky Derby Museum officials have announced plans spend $6.5 million to refurbish and expand the facility.

The project, the largest since the museum was built in 1985, will bring 16,000 square feet of new and renovated space. A new third floor will be added as part of the project.

"With this expansion, we'll create a new, dynamic way to present our mission to engage, educate and excite everyone about the extraordinary event that is the Kentucky Derby," Museum President and CEO Patrick Armstrong said in a statement.

Officials said the museum set an attendance record in fiscal 2017, with more than 230,000 people visiting the attraction.

The new construction project is slated to begin next year and be completed by November.
