LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - Mayor Jim Gray has announced that the city will be filing a lawsuit against wholesale drug distributors.
The suit was filed in response to the city's opioid epidemic. Gray says Lexington should hold companies accountable for dumping opiates into the city. The suit will be filed against 20 drug companies. The lawsuit will ask pharmaceutical companies to reimburse the city for police, medical and fire expenses related to overdose, including Narcan.
Other costs for treatment of the epidemic have skyrocketed and include about $1 million a year in treatment and counseling services and $150,000 a year for the Needle Exchange Program
It's the 35th county in Kentucky to file a similar suit.
This announcement comes days after Kentucky's AG Beshear announced an initiative to combat opioids earlier this week against opioid maker Endo Pharmaceuticals after nearly 200 Kentuckians overdosed on Opana.
