This weekend, Lees and LongDramaCentre will bring to the Norton Center for the Arts’ Weisiger Theatre stage Caryl Churchill’s “Cloud 9,” a parody that shifts through time to explore the strict attitudes toward sex during the Victorian era.

The performance will feature Brennen Amonett ‘19, Rachel Kent ‘18, Darcey Lees, Joseph Long, Grant Markwell ’18, Tommy McFarland ‘19 and Katherine Moeykens ‘19. Both Long and Lees are visiting from the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance in London.

Additionally, “Cloud 9” explores themes of sexuality and gender, topics that the plays’s director Patrick Kagan-Moore, professor of dramatic arts, finds particularly relevant to present day.

“It is in depictions of individual gender and sexuality, and in the discussion of empowerment and oppression, that ‘Cloud 9’ best serves contemporary concerns,” he explained.

Elaborating on this viewpoint, Kagan-Moore notes that the concepts of gender and sex that the play examines have changed significantly throughout his lifetime.

“It’s my view that the greatest social change that I have seen occur in my lifetime centers upon gender and identity,” he explained. “Most of my students, my children and much of the world that I experience look at gender and identity very differently than I and all my siblings did growing up.”

Kagan-Moore hopes the play reflects and continues to encourage those evolutions in social perspectives, particularly in light of recent events.

“With our newscasts full of so many powerful men behaving badly, with so many (women and men, girls and boys) asserting difference and crafting their own identity respecting gender and sexuality, ‘Cloud 9’ forces a discussion that we need to embrace. We hope that’s what happens,” he concludes.
