National Guard Troops Return To KY

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) - There was a big homecoming at Blue Grass Airport as 160 National Guard troops returned from a nearly year-long deployment in the Middle East.

Following a brief ceremony thanking the troops for their work, there were many joyous reunions between families, including Sgt. Kathleen Thomassy and her 3-year-old daughter, Maddie.

"It's incredible.  This is what I've waited for for an entire year.  I'm just overjoyed," said Sgt. Kathleen Thomassy.

Sgt. Thomassy is a member of the 237th Engineer Company, based out of Hazard and Jackson.  The group completed more than 100 work orders and 38 construction projects throughout six countries over 11 months.

"She joined the National Guard not too far out of school and she's been in it ever since.  She enjoys doing service for her country and we're proud of her for that," said Sgt. Thomassy's mother, Bonnie Strong.

The unit left Kentucky for the Middle East just before Christmas of 2016.  Now, they are home in time for this holiday season.

"I want to spend as much time with my daughter and make up for lost time," said Sgt. Thomassy.
