Deputies: Man Who Stole Police Cruiser Was Escapee

Posted: Updated:

MCCRAKEN COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18/WPSD)  Investigators say that the man who stole a deputy's cruiser and crashed it was an escaped McCracken County inmate.

The incident started around 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon on Interstate 24 in Marshall County. A McCraken county deputy saw a red car speeding on the interstate and crash.

When the deputy stopped to check on the driver, officials say the man attacked him -- and took his cruiser. State Police caught up with him after he crashed the cruiser on I-69 in Caldwell County.

Once the vehicle was stopped, it was determined that James Booker, 34, was an escaped inmate from Paducah. Court documents say he also stole the red Chevy Colbalt that he crashed before stealing the cruiser.

Jail officials say he had walked away earlier from the jail.

He now faces charges in Marshall and Caldwell counties. KSP says the Paducah Police Department is investigating the theft of the Cobalt.

In Marshall County, Booker is charged with first degree robbery, receiving stolen property of $10,000 or more, first degree criminal mischief, first degree fleeing or evading police in a motor vehicle, third degree assault on a police officer, reckless driving, first degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, second degree wanton endangerment, driving on a DUI suspended license on the second offense, and being a fugitive from another state.
