Sensory-Friendly Santa Coming To Fayette Mall

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - Even though it's not Thanksgiving yet, many stores and malls are already decked out for Christmas.

Which means visits to Santa are right around around the corner. Fayette Mall is organizing a special sensory-friendly Santa event so every child has a chance to meet him.

"For some people, they cannot go in public with their children for fear of the response of others around them, or what their children might do," said Sara Spragens.

Spragens is the president of the Autism Society of the Bluegrass.

The hustle and bustle of Christmastime at the mall can be too much for some children.

"Many of our kids on the autism spectrum get overwhelmed in environments that are very busy or noisy, and might react as if they are in fear or in pain," said Spragens.

That's why Fayette Mall is providing children a sensory-friendly, compassionate, chance to meet Santa.

"So it's a great time to come out in a low stimulation environment and have that special photo experience with Santa," said Sarah Enlow, marketing director at Fayette Mall.

"We really appreciate it because there are not enough things for kids with autism by any means in this area, or really anywhere," said Spragens.

The event is on December 3 from 9am-11am, which is before the mall's doors open to the public. Enlow says you can even RSVP to guarantee your spot.

"So families don't have to stand in line and deal with the anxiety of that as they get ready for their experience with Santa," said Enlow.
