HAZARD, Ky. (LEX 18) -  A vehicle that police say, turned and fled from a traffic checkpoint, was involved in a crash that resulted in the deaths of two men.

Troopers with Kentucky State Police in Hazard were conducting a safety checkpoint on old KY Highway 80 in the Combs community when they observed a vehicle abruptly stop prior to their location. The vehicle turned around and sped away, eastbound toward Airport Gardens.

Troopers got into their cruisers and attempted to locate the vehicle in the direction of travel it was last seen heading.  A short distance away, they encountered the vehicle, a 2002 Nissan passenger car, which had overturned on the roadway near Turner Brother’s Car Care Center on Combs Road.

Two men were ejected from the car.  Johnny Gibson, age 58 of Bulan, KY, was transported to the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased by the Perry County Deputy Coroner John Collett.  Donovan Miller, age 28 of Leburn, KY, was transported to Hazard ARH, then was later airlifted to Pikeville Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased by Pike County Coroner Russell Roberts.

No autopsies will be performed, and toxicology results on both subjects are pending.
