Babysitter Accused In Abuse Waives Case To Grand Jury

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Madison County woman accused of abusing an 18-month-old in her care on Wednesday waived her case to a grand jury.

Angela Powers initially told Richmond Police that the child in her care fell down stairs and lost consciousness. However, after the child was transported to the hospital, the responding officer noticed several injuries that did not correspond to a fall.

She previously entered a not guilty plea in the case.

By waiving her case to a grand jury, Powers is cause for her to be charged with first-degree criminal abuse and second-degree assault.

Powers stood Wednesday alongside her attorney, who told the judge after speaking with the lead investigator that she wished to waive her right to a preliminary hearing.

The 18-month-old was suffering from a brain bleed and other external injuries. According to her arrest citation, Powers admitted to shoving the child, causing her to hit her head and back on the TV stand. The documents also say she admitted to making up the story about the fall.

Powers' attorney argued for her bond to be lowered, but the judge declined, saying it would depreciate the seriousness of the alleged crimes.

Powers was being held in the Madison County Detention Center.
