Conference Aims To End Sexual Assault

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) A conference in Lexington is helping raise awareness for domestic violence and sexual abuse. The Kentucky Coalition against Domestic Violence raises money throughout the year to help victims and on Wednesday, they received a generous gift.

The 'Ending Sexual Assault and Domestic violence' conference was held at the Marriott Griffin Gate. Many gathered in support of abuse victims.

"Today we were excited to kick off the 2018 challenge by doubling our investment with 10 thousand dollars," said Elizabeth Starr with WellCare of Kentucky.

WellCare of Kentucky is pledging $10,000 to help the Kentucky Coalition against Domestic Violence keep doing what they do, helping ease the financial strain for victims.

"This money is available to help with basic needs.  When you flee a situation you don't always have everything that you were used to when you go. You may need a deposit for a new apartment or your rent paid," said Starr.

Vendors set up at the event too, such as 'Made for Freedom, a jewelry and accessory company with a very important purpose, giving jobs to the most vulnerable.

"All of our products are made by women rescued from sex trafficking and those coming out of marginalized situations," said Dawn Manske with Made for Freedom. Manske knows a conference like the one at the Marriott Griffin Gate helps spread the word of their mission.
