BBB Warns Of Scam On Facebook

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) Officials with the Better Business Bureau said that they are seeing an increase in scammers reaching victims through Facebook messenger.

While the popular social media site connects you to your friends and family, it also connects you with con-artists.

"Con-artists will prey upon people to steal their information and money," said Heather Clay with the Better Business Bureau.

She said the new scam banks on your trust.

"They receive a message through Facebook Messenger from someone they think they know, and that person tells them they saw their name on a list to win some money," said Clay.

The scammer says that first, you will have to give them money for a processing fee.

"And that way they lure you into following some other web links or calling some phone numbers and that's where the con-artists get you," she said.

Clay's advice is that most of the time, you're not going to get notified of any kind of prize winnings through social media.

If you are approached with one of these scams, simply ignore the message, block the person, and report their account to Facebook.
