LEX 18 Digital: Crews Battle Forest Fires

Posted: Updated:

Crews with the Kentucky Division of Forestry are battling eight active forest fires in the Southeast part of the state.

The biggest fires the division is fighting include a 400 acre fire in Perry County and a 200 acre fire in Harlan County, said Brandon Howard, State Fire Chief for the Division of Forestry.

"We currently have eight forest fires going for nearly 800 acres," he said. "There's been several fires over the last week that we've controlled."

Thursday's forecast called for rain, Howard said, enough to make things better in the short term but not enough to put the fires out.

"A day like this is good for our resources to be able to get a handle on fires," he said, "but we're expecting this weekend to be fairly active."

Most forest fires are started by arsonists, Howard said.

"Over 60 percent are caused by arson," he said.

Anyone with information on a suspected arson should call 1-800-272-7766.

Kentucky's Wildlife Hazard Season continues until Dec. 15, Howard said. It will pick up again Feb 15 to April 30.

"That just means the conditions are right typically to have fires but we can have fires any time during the year," he said.

During Wildlife Hazard Season, Howard said people shouldn't burn anything within 150 feet of the forest.
