Get Ready for Cold and Snow - It's Winter Weather Awareness Week

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - Lexington Emergency Management, along with the National Weather Service’s Louisville office, wants Fayette County residents to get ready for the challenges of winter weather during Winter Weather Awareness Week – December 1-7.

“Winter can provide Fayette County residents with some of the biggest challenges to overall livability,” said Pat Dugger, Lexington Emergency Management Director.  “Last winter was amazingly mild and relatively snow and cold free. That tends to make people relax and let up on being prepared for cold, snow and even ice storms.  We want people to take time to be prepared for winter weather challenges.”

The National Weather Service will dedicate each day of Winter Weather Awareness Week to a particular theme.  Lexington Emergency Management will provide additional information on its website, BeReadyLexington.com, as well as its social media channels on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Specific areas that will be targeted include:

·         Winter weather advisories, watches and warnings – What they mean and where to find them.

·         General winter weather preparedness

·         The types and effects of winter precipitation

·         Cold weather safety

·         Severe winter weather types

·         Fog safety

·         Flooding safety

More information about emergency preparedness is available from the Division of Emergency Management website available at:  www.BeReadyLexington.com Information about the division is also available through the Lexington Emergency Management Facebook page - Lexington KY Emergency Management, its Twitter account: @Lexkyem and Instagram: @Lexkyem. Residents are also encouraged to download and use the Emergency Management smartphone app – Lexington Emergency Management – available at the Apple and Google Play stores.
