The four seasons are also divided by the amount of incoming solar radiation and the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Solar Winter is the quarter of the year with lowest amount of incoming solar radiation. This season actually begins in early November. The Winter Solstice, the start of astronomical winter, occurs when the Earth is positioned directly over the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere. This is the shortest day and longest night in the Northern Hemisphere. The first day of winter is year is December 21st.

Meteorologists are partial to the "meteorological" seasons. During Meteorological Winter, average temperatures will progressively get colder through the middle of the season. Lexington's average high will fall from 48 degrees on December 1st to the lower 40s during January and February. Average lows will slide from freezing to start the season to the mid 20s during the “Dead of Winter” in January and early February.
