Catch a Supermoon Sunday Night

Posted: Updated:

We will see something in our skies that we haven't seen all year - a supermoon. Sunday night's full moon, the “Full Cold Moon,” will be the first and only supermoon of 2017. A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at perigee, or the closest point of the Moon's orbit around the Earth. At perigee, the Moon is approximately 225,000 miles away. This month's full moon will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than a full moon at the farthest point, or apogee.

This full moon will kickoff a special "supermoon trilogy." There will be three consecutive supermoons starting with the one Sunday night and continuing into the start of the new year. The next one will be on New Year's Day, followed by the final of the three supermoons on January 31st. If there's a supermoon you don't want to miss, it's the one on January 31st.

The late January supermoon will coincide with a total lunar eclipse that will be visible across western North America, the Pacific, and eastern Asia. The lunar eclipse will occur at moonset. (A partial lunar eclipse will be visible in Kentucky as we're waking up on January 31st.) The Earth will cast a shadow on to the Moon, giving it a reddish-brown hue.

As if the January 31, 2018 full moon wasn't special enough, it will also be a “blue moon.” The second full month of a particular month is designated as a blue moon. A full moon will occur on average every 29.5 days. Given the lunar cycle, a "blue moon" only occurs every two and a half years.

You don't need any special equipment to view a full moon or a supermoon. You shouldn't have any troubles viewing Sunday's supermoon. Skies will remain clear, but you may need to dress in some warm layers. A telescope or binoculars will allow you see more details on the Moon's surface.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford is recalling about 550,000 cars and SUVs in North America to fix a gearshift problem that could cause the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly. The recall covers certain 2013 through 2016 Fusion sedans and some 2013 and 2014 Escape small SUVs. Ford says a bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission can fall off. If this happens, the driver could shift into park but the vehicle could be in another gear. That could let the vehicle roll, inc...
