Lexington Artist Loses Pieces, Tools In Early Morning House Fire

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Lexington firefighters were sifting through the remains of a Menifee Avenue home after it caught fire early Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 3:30 a.m. At the time, no one was inside the home, but at least one person did live in the residence. Firefighters called the home "a total loss" due to the damage.

Investigators do not know where the fire started but said they do not believe the cause is suspicious in nature.

The person who lived there has identified himself as Kiptoo Tarus, a local artist.

"It gets to be surreal for me. I'm like, oh yeah I lost all of that," said Tarus.

Despite losing almost all of his pictures and sculptures, he says he's trying to stay positive thanks to support from the community.

"That is like so comforting to me knowing that there's a lot of people behind me and that really and truly love me," said Tarus.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
