Richmond Police Appreciation Day Grows Out Of Tragedy

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Ky. (LEX-18) — The Richmond community celebrates RPD Appreciation Day on Sunday.

It's an event that began two years ago after a Richmond police officer was killed in the line of duty. Officer Daniel Ellis was shot while he investigated a robbery in 2015.

"Richmond is a small community but it has a tremendously big heart," said Steve Rosenberg, coordinator for RPD Appreciation Day.

Local businesses across Richmond and in surrounding cities have contributed to show appreciation for the officers, Rosenberg said. On Friday, officers got to choose between certificates to dinner at local restaurants like Outback Steakhouse, Logan's Roadhouse and O'Charley's. Keeneland tickets and UK basketball tickets were also available for officers.

"This year the program has expanded way too much," Rosenberg said. "It shows how much support there is."

Each certificate is for $45.70, a reminder of Officer Ellis' badge number, 457.

"We don't really have to remind them of the dangers of their job," he said "When they get a $45.70 certificate the community is acknowledging to them we understand what you deal with everyday and we appreciate it."

The appreciation day means a lot to Richmond Police Sgt. Josh Hale.

"It's bittersweet for us to hear 457 all the time but it does mean a lot that the community rallied behind this," Hale said.

The officers don't expect this kind of recognition, he said, they chose to do this job. But it's nice to know the community cares, he said.

"Anything that we can do to bond with our community is always what we want to do," Hale said.
