On if he played against Northwestern when he was at Nebraska…
“Yes, I played sparingly. I’m excited to play them again. I can’t wait. It’s going to be a great opportunity for our team to get back on board and respond, get an eighth win and go out there and do what we can to make our fans proud, to make our team and our coaches proud.”

On what he will tell his teammates about Northwestern…
“I’ll definitely tell them that Coach Fitzgerald is a tough coach. He played for a while there and he will motivate them really well. I can’t wait to just go out there and have the opportunity to play against another team, the Big 10 especially.”

On vital is this game to show they are a different team…
“I think it’s very vital. I don’t think we need to put any unnecessary pressure on ourselves but we do need our fans to help uplift us and we need to uplift our fans. I think it’s going to work  hand-in-hand. We definitely need to just go out and play our best football and be the best team we can be that day. During our preparation, do as much as we can to get on these guys and be really prepared and focused to play the game we know how to play.”

On playing in Nashville and the fans coming to support the team…
“I think our fans will definitely be out there. They want to see us play and they love Nashville. When we played Vanderbilt, we had a great showing. I think the whole stadium was blue. That was tremendous and it was a good thing for us. We played really well that day so I anticipate us playing really well in this bowl game.”

On playing a more traditional offense than what Georgia Tech posed last year …
“Last year, playing against Georgia Tech, they were cut-blocking and they were very nasty so we had to change up a whole lot. This time we can really focus on what their scheme is not have to worry about nasty cut-blocks, it will be fun. It will be a traditional game-preparation week.”

On what young guys have impressed him that can get a lot out of extra practices…
“Particularly on defense, I don’t really see a whole lot of offense, but Josh Paschal, Quinton Bohanna, Dovonte Robinson jump out at me. We have a great group. I was just in the weight room the other day lifting with some of those guys and I tell you what, I think fans and a lot of people at UK are going to be really proud of what’s coming up. These guys are working hard. They want to win and carry on the culture that’s been established. I can’t wait to see them play. It’s going to be a blast.”

On what coming to Kentucky has meant to him…
“It’s meant a lot to me. This program I hold dear to my heart. This is home. I was at that other program for two years and that was a nice program but this is where I can see myself being for a while. If I wanted to stay here and have a family here I could do that. I love this place. I can’t wait to get to this bowl game and cap it off with a win.”

On what specifically they can do to improve their run defense…
“We have to play and excute. We can’t be out of gaps, that’s something that was huge. We can’t just be focused on just one thing we have to see everything. As a defense you have to be able to hustle to the ball and be able to play with grit and a good mentality and be able to focus when things get tough. We kind of struggled with that late because we wanted it so bad. Our team is so passionate. We have guys that want to win. We’ll get on track with this bowl game.”

On Northwestern running the ball 40 times a game…
“When teams run the ball, I take it personal. That’s football. That’s man-on-man and winning your one-on-one.  ‘We’re going to run the ball and are you going to stop us?’ That’s the challenge. Our defense will be ready to face that challenge.”

On what he told Stephen Johnson when he was being recruited to Kentucky…
“I’ll told him the vision our coaches had and Mr. Barnhart had for us. It doesn’t just start with Mr. Barnhart or Coach Stoops, it starts with our fans and our professors, people that want to see us win. That was the biggest thing. I told him we are going to compete in games and we’re going to change this program and he was willing to do that. Everything he has done so far has shown that and I’m proud of him. I’m proud to be his teammate and be a fellow caption next to him.”
