How To Get The Best View Of The Only Supermoon Of 2017

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - If you look up at the sky Sunday night into Monday morning you’ll see a full moon, but it's not just any full moon.

Overnight, you'll be able to see the only Supermoon of 2017.

If you're a die-hard stargazer, you might want to set your alarm for a little earlier tonight.

“So the supermoon is going to happen officially December 4th at 3:45 in the morning,” said Aida Bermudez, Hummel Planetarium Educator.

That's right... The moon will be closest to the earth overnight -- it'll be brighter and larger... Making for a picturesque sky.

“The full moon will officially happen at 10:47 on Sunday,” said Bermudez.

And since there has to be a full moon to be considered a "super moon," this is your first and last chance to see it in 2017.

“The last one happened in May, but it was a new moon, so it has to be a full moon to be considered a supermoon,” said Bermudez.

And don't worry; we'll have mostly clear skies overnight. So you'll be able to see the supermoon at its brightest.

“When it comes to astronomy, we just have to hope for the best weather. No clouds. The moon will be bright, even though there's some clouds, hopefully clouds will be in and out that we won't have all that,” said Bermudez.

Once again, be sure to enjoy this astronomical event, because it's the last super moon we'll see for a while.
