Thief Steals Rims Off New Truck

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A thief looking for auto parts took a big risk when he ripped the wheels off a pickup truck at a lot on Richmond Road.

The thief wasn't caught after Friday's incident, but he did leave quite a trail.

When you steal from the Don Franklin Automall, you can expect at least one of more than 50 surveillance cameras will catch you in the act. That's exactly what happened in the wee hours of Friday morning.

"We captured somebody pulling into our lot from the south side of the city and they pulled into our lot, and pulled back through, and stole a wheel and tire package," said Mark Sawyer, with the Don Franklin Auto Group.

The wheels were stolen off the truck between 3:21 and 3:56 a.m.

The cost of the loss?

"Right about $2,500," Sawyer said.

The suspect was driving a white Toyota Tundra, believed to be a 2004-07 model.

"They weren't the most expensive tires and wheel package we had on the property, so I'm thinking they were targeting that specific wheel and tire package," Sawyer said.

Now the truck is the target of a Lexington police investigation as they sift through video evidence.

"As he pulls out, I have him captured on the video of the Nissan store and the Hyundai store with the property in the back of his vehicle," Sawyer said.
