Once Denied Marriage License, Man Seeks To Replace Rowan Co. Clerk Davis

Posted: Updated:

MOREHEAD, Ky. (LEX 18) — One of the people who was refused a marriage license by Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage is now seeking Davis's job.

David Ermold, an English professor at the University of Pikeville, on Wednesday announced his candidacy for Rowan County Clerk at an event in Morehead.

"I am honored to announce my candidacy for Rowan County Clerk," Ermold said in a statement. "I am running to restore the confidence of the people in our clerk’s office and because I believe that the leaders of our community should act with integrity and fairness, and they should put the needs of their constituents first."

Davis sparked controversy in 2015 when she refused to issue marriage licenses after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling effectively legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. She was briefly jailed, and the General Assembly later changed the marriage forms to remove the need for clerks' signatures.

"With this election, we have the opportunity to strengthen the caring community that we have worked so hard to build, and we have the opportunity to set an example for Kentucky and for the entire nation," Ermold said.
