IIHS 2018 Top Safety Pick+ Winners, Camry Among Winners

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON  (LEX 18) - The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has updated its Top Safety Pick+requirements to include good-rated headlights and good or acceptable passenger-side protection in small overlap front crashes. With the tougher requirements, 15 vehicles qualify for top honors.

Kia and Subaru models were among the highest rated; no minivans, pickups or mini-cars made the cut. The Toyota Camry, made in Georgetown, also made the cut.

A Top Safety Pick Plus vehicle earned a good rating in crash tests and roof strength, and high marks for crash avoidance technology. IIHS is now demanding better performance from car makers when it comes to headlights and passenger protection in what are known as small overlap crashes -- ones involving just the front corner of the vehicle.

Here is the list:

Small cars

  • Kia Forte (sedan only)
  • Kia Soul
  • Subaru Impreza
  • Subaru WRX

Midsize cars

  • Subaru Legacy
  • Subaru Outback
  • Toyota Camry

Large luxury cars

  • BMW 5 series
  • Genesis G80
  • Genesis G90
  • Lincoln Continental
  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class (sedan only)

Midsize SUVs

  • Hyundai Santa Fe
  • Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

Midsize Luxury SUVs

  • Mercedes-Benz GLC

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky would eventually eliminate a program allowing public school students to work from home during snow days under a bill that has cleared the state Senate. Senate bill 73 passed the Kentucky Senate by a vote of 36-0. The bill would eliminate the state's Non-Traditional Instruction program in three years.
