Third Dog AT LHS Passes From Strep Zoo, Donations Needed

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)-- A third dog has passed away after an outbreak of Strep Zoo at the Lexington Humane Society.

It's been a rough week for workers at the humane society. An outbreak of Streptococcus zooepidemicus was discovered in the facility. The staff reacted quickly, shutting down adoptions for the week as strep zoo is spread through airborne exposure, contact with bodily fluids and contaminated surfaces.

Susan Malcomb, president of the organization, tells LEX 18 that the third dog that passed away was one of the cases initially discovered by veterinarians.  One dog died from the respiratory illness and another was humanely euthanized, bringing the total to three.

Malcomb stressed that other animals were responding to treatment and she thanked the community for their support, including businesses who have brought snacks and food for workers who are treating the animals and cleaning the facility.

Just in the past week the shelter has spent over $14,500 treating the disease. The shelter desperately needs donations.
