Crime Stoppers: Shoplifters Intercepted In Mall Parking Lot

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) The Christmas shopping season at Fayette Mall has turned into Shoplifting Season.

Dillard's, one of the major department stores at the mall,  has been hit hard twice in the last month. This time, it was a group working together.

"The male suspect had gathered up about $1,000 in clothing, which is obviously a lot of merchandise, he walked to the counter and sets it down," said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department.

But the man had no intention of paying.

"He then asks the clerk, and this is a pretty common technique, a question that's going to lead her away from the register," said Detective Thomas. "Then the females come in, scoop the merchandise up and they immediately go to past all points of sale. And get out of the store."

The Dillard's Loss Prevention Team intercepted the two in the parking lot.

"They were able to gather the merchandise back,  but the suspects refused to stop," said Detective Thomas. He said they will be charged with felony theft when they are caught.

"There is no doubt this is not their first time doing this. These people were working together. It takes some collaboration," he said.
