Crews Working To Treat Roads Christmas Eve

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - Last minute travelers might have to deal with messy road conditions overnight and into the early morning hours.

State road crews were put to work this Christmas Eve, making sure the interstates and state routes were salted.

Several road crews are out working hard this night before Christmas.

Treating our roadways and making sure they're salted and ready for the rain and snow mixture that we've seen tonight.

“Well, we have twelve counties. So that will be at least twelve. And we do have some contractors coming in too, to supplement the highway crews as well,” said

The District Seven Transportation Cabinet has been closely monitoring the forecast, and made the decision early this afternoon to send out crews.

“We want to be proactive. And although the precipitation is predicted to dwindle, and temperatures will of course drop, we don't anticipate this being a major winter event. We want to do all that we can to ensure that motorists are safe,”

We caught up with some last minute shoppers earlier tonight, and they hadn't had too much of an issue getting to the stores.

“When I came over here, I can tell they're starting to get a little bit slick as I was pulling into the parking lot,”

As the evening progresses, and officials monitor the weather, that will determine how long road crews will be out treating the roads.

As temperatures drop below freezing overnight, the roads could get slippery.

So if you have plans in the morning, just take your time, and watch out for ice.
