MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (EKB/AP) - It was a tragic Christmas day for one Martin County family.
A six-year-old boy reportedly disappeared Monday morning, and hours later, his body was found in the Big Sandy River.
“We had a lot of good help from a lot of people though. They were searching the banks on the West Virginia and the Kentucky side,” said Kermit Fire Department Chief Wilburn Reece.
The Kermit Fire Department told EKB News there were nearly 50 first responders searching for the boy.
The six-year-old went missing before noon, a couple of hours later their stomachs dropped when they found his body.
“They found the kid's hat. The body was found about a mile from the site. They tried to revive him but I think it'd been too long,” said Reece.
The department says they were able to track the path he took to the river, but they do not know how or why the six-year-old got in the water.
“It’s a bad situation. It's not a very good Christmas I'll tell you that. I feel sorry for the family, I wish there had been more we could have done, we done all we could do,” said Reece
The Associated Press has identified the boy as Paul Bowen.
