Lexington Boy Finds Help And Saves Grandmother

Posted: Updated:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - A Lexington family is counting their holiday blessings after a child's quick action helped save his grandmother.

Now granny is back home, which for Demetrius Gay, was the best gift of all.

Demetrius's mother, Tonika Gay, choked up when describing what happened less than two weeks ago.

Her mother-in-law, Brenda Gay was watching 7 year-old Demetrius and 4 year-old Danielle, who were on Christmas break.

Demetrius heard a noise from the bathroom, and found his grandmother unconscious inside. He couldn't find her home phone to call 911, so he walked outside with his sister.

"He couldn't find help. So he took her (Danielle) by the hand, and he kind of started walking up and down the sidewalk where she lives to see if he could find someone who could help," said Tonika.

Tonika says neighbors ran over to help Brenda as first responders were en route.

She was sedated for 24 hours before being diagnosed with meningitis.

"She's doing a lot better," said Tonika Gay.

Just before Christmas, their grandmother returned home in time for the family feast.

"I'm just happy. I'm excited. Blessed to have a smart guy to be able to do what he did," said Tonika. "Just glad he was in the right place at the right time."

Demetrius enjoyed his gifts from Santa, but there was only one he really wished for.

"It was actually my granny coming for Christmas Eve. That's the present that I actually wanted," said Demetrius.
