Keep Your Pets Safe During Cold Weather

Posted: Updated:

(LEX 18) - As organizations work to make sure that people without shelter are kept warm, LEX 18 would like to take this opportunity to remind you to shelter your animals during cold temperatures.

According to the American Veterinary Medicine Association, cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather if possible. It’s a common belief that dogs and cats are more resistant than people to cold weather because of their fur, but it’s untrue.

Animals are also susceptible to frostbite.

The AVMA also recommends checking your animal's paws for signs of cold-weather injury or damage, such as cracked paw pads or bleeding. Dogs' feet, legs, and belly may pick up deicers, antifreeze, or other chemicals that could be toxic.

If you are unable to keep your animal inside during cold weather, provide him/her with a warm, solid shelter against wind.
